Cornea and Its Diseases

    FAST MEETING FORM

    What is the Cornea?

Cornea, located at the very front of the eye, transparent and dome-shaped It is a tissue that allows light to enter the eye and focus clearly on the retina. It also protects the eye from external factors and maintains its shape.

When the cornea is healthy, it is transparent and allows light to pass through properly. However, some diseases can impair the structure and function of the cornea, can significantly reduce the quality of vision.

    Frequently asked questions?

    Common Corneal Diseases and Treatments

    Microcornea

What is it? It is a condition where the cornea is congenitally smaller than normal.

    Symptoms: Blurred vision, light sensitivity.

Treatment: Glasses or contact lenses in mild cases, surgery (keratoplasty) in advanced cases.

    -Keratitis

What is it? It is inflammation of the cornea due to infection or irritation.

Symptoms: Redness, eye pain, watering, light sensitivity, blurred vision.

Treatment: Antibiotic, antiviral or antifungal drops depending on the cause; in some cases, steroid drops.

    - Keratoconus

What is it? It is the thinning of the cornea and its cone shape.

Symptoms: Blurred vision, light reflections, astigmatism.

Treatment: Special contact lenses, corneal crosslinking, or corneal transplant.

    - Corneal Dystrophies

What is it? They are hereditary, genetically transmitted corneal disorders.

Symptoms: Loss of transparency, blurred vision, pain.

Treatment: Glasses, contact lenses, laser therapy, or corneal transplant.

    - Corneal Ulcer

What is it? An open wound on the cornea.

Symptoms: Severe pain, redness, discharge, blurred vision.

Treatment: Requires immediate intervention. Antibiotics, antiviral, or antifungal drops are used. In advanced cases, surgery may be necessary.

    - Conjunctivitis

What is it? It is an inflammation of the membrane covering the white part of the eye (conjunctiva).

    Symptoms: Redness, itching, watering, crusting.

Treatment: Antibiotic drops, allergy medications, or supportive care, depending on the cause.

    - Pterygium

What is it? The growth of the conjunctiva towards the cornea.

    Symptoms: Redness, discomfort, blurred vision.

Treatment: Drops for symptoms, surgical removal if the growth progresses.

    Corneal Transplant (Keratoplasty)

Corneal transplantation is one of the most effective solutions for treating damaged or diseased corneas. It is particularly effective in the following cases:

    -Advanced keratoconus

    -Advanced corneal dystrophies

    -Permanent damage after corneal ulcer

    -Microcornea or deformities

The majority of patients experience significant vision improvement after corneal transplantation.

Early Diagnosis is Important for Your Eye Health

Corneal diseases can usually be treated successfully when diagnosed early. If you experience burning, blurring, pain, or vision problems, be sure to see an ophthalmologist.
