    What is Pterygium?

    The cornea is a thickened tissue that grows from the white part of the eye toward the cornea. External influences (sun, dust, wind) irritate the surface of the eye, causing a thickening of the skin that resembles a callus.

    -Redness

    -Burning, stinging sensation

    Why Does It Happen?

    -Exposure to sunlight (UV rays) for long periods of time

    -Dusty, windy and chemical environments

    -It is more common, especially in hot climates.

    Is it contagious?

    No, eye pustules are not contagious.

    Treatment and Surgery?

    -It is removed with a short surgery under local anesthesia.

    -Redness and stinging may last for up to 1 month after the surgery.

    -The risk of recurrence is low but does exist.

    -Protective drops are used.

    Ways of Protection?

    -Using sunglasses and hats

    -Avoid dusty, windy environments as much as possible

    -Stay away from cigarettes and smoke

    -If it blocks vision

    -If it causes constant discomfort in the eyes

    -If it causes aesthetic problems

    -If it moves forward and approaches the pupil
