Visual Disorders in Children and Infants

Children most of the time they cannot express their vision problems. This can lead to a variety of problems, from learning disabilities to social developmental issues. Eye problems that go unnoticed, especially in the preschool years, directly impact a child's quality of life.

    Frequently asked questions?

    What are the symptoms?

Visual impairments in children usually manifest with the following symptoms:

-Blinking and tilting the head while reading

    -Frequent rubbing of the eyes

    -Constant frowning

-Attention to nearby objects, indifference to distant ones

-Complaint about not being able to see the board

    -Reluctance to read, attention deficit

    -Headaches and eyestrain

    Common Vision Problems?

Myopia (Inability to See Far Away Clearly)

Myopia is a refractive error that is particularly common in school-aged children.
Distant objects appear blurry, making chalkboard writing particularly difficult to distinguish.

    Symptoms:

    -Inability to read distant texts

    -Don't squint

    -Headache, fatigue

-Inability to focus on the board

-It may be genetically transmitted and can be controlled with the use of glasses.

    Astigmatism (Blurred Vision)?

Astigmatism is caused by the irregular curvature of the cornea, causing blurring of both near and far vision.

    Symptoms:

    Fluctuation in visual clarity

    -Eye rubbing habit

    -Reluctance to read

    -Headaches and difficulty concentrating

Astigmatism is often seen together with myopia or hyperopia.

Hyperopia (Inability to See Near Things Clearly)?

Hyperopia (farsightedness) is characterized by difficulty focusing on near objects. It is a refractive error that is usually inherited.

    Symptoms:

-Inability to focus on nearby books or toys

    -Blinking, rubbing

    -Lack of interest in school

-Development of strabismus (especially in high hyperopia)

If hyperopia is not monitored regularly in childhood, it can cause other disorders such as strabismus.

What Happens If It Is Not Treated?

Untreated refractive errors can cause permanent vision loss in childhood. This condition is called amblyopia (lazy eye).
Amblyopia usually occurs in one eye and is difficult to detect because children may mistake the blurry vision they are accustomed to for normal.

    Lazy eye:

-It occurs due to insufficient stimulation of the developing visual centers.

-It is much more difficult to treat after the age of 8–9.

-Nearly 100% success can be achieved with early diagnosis.
