Phakic Intraocular Lens Treatment

    FAST MEETING FORM

    What is a Phakic Lens?

Phakic lenses are artificial lenses implanted within the eye, as thin as contact lenses, and positioned in front of the eye's natural lens. They are used to correct refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. These lenses improve quality of life by eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses. Phakic lenses are permanent lenses within the eye but cannot be felt or removed.

Phakic lenses, first designed in 1977, are placed in front of the iris (the colored layer of the eye), and today, much more modern and aesthetically pleasing models are available. The presence of the lens is unnoticeable from the outside.

    Frequently asked questions?

    Types of Phakic Lenses?

Intraocular Phakic Lenses (POOLs): These lenses are placed in front of or behind the natural lens and remain in the eye permanently.

-Artisan Lenses: Placed between the iris and the cornea, they effectively correct refractive errors.

-Visian ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens): It is a flexible lens type that is placed behind the iris, in front of the natural lens.

Who is Suitable for Phakic Lenses?

Phakic lenses are an ideal alternative for patients whose corneas are unsuitable for laser surgeries like excimer lasers (iLASIK, LASEK, PRK). Additionally, those with refractive errors such as high myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism may also benefit from phakic lenses.

    Advantages of Phakic Lens?

Provides clear vision without glasses or contact lenses.

-It is a long-lasting and stable solution.

-Protects eye health and does not harm the natural structure.

-High success rate and patient satisfaction.

    Pre-Phakic Lens Surgery Evaluation?

After your doctor determines your visual acuity and eyeglass prescription, the depth of the anterior chamber and the number of corneal cells are measured. These tests determine whether your eye is suitable for phakic lenses.

What Should Be Considered Before the Operation?

-Blood thinning medications such as aspirin and Coumadin should be discontinued before surgery.

-Those who will receive local anesthesia can have a light breakfast, while those who will receive general anesthesia are asked to remain hungry.

-A sedative may be given on the day of the operation.

How is Phakic Lens Surgery Performed?

Under local anesthesia, after the eye is sterilized, a very small incision is made in the cornea. The lens is placed in front of the iris, and a protective material is injected into the back of the cornea to prevent damage to the delicate tissues inside the eye. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes.

Can I Have Laser or Cataract Surgery After Phakic Lens?

Yes, eyes with phakic lenses can undergo laser surgery or, in the future, cataract surgery. If a cataract develops, the phakic lens is removed, the natural lens is removed, and a suitable replacement lens is implanted.

    Post-Operative Process?

It's recommended that you rest for a few hours after surgery. Your eye should remain closed, and you may experience mild pain and a stinging sensation. Painkillers are recommended. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled the next day, and the eye drops recommended by your doctor should be used regularly. Light sensitivity, watering, and blurred vision may occur in the first few days; these are usually temporary.
